Hi — We had a win in the family this week! Grandie number three ate baby spinach leaves on her gluten free pizza. She calls them leafy greens. Hearing that was almost as wonderous as hearing her tell me she loves me.
It’s a start. Good to know that school is having a positive impact on lifestyle. Do you know that the recommended amount of fresh leafy greens for a healthy lifestyle is 2-3 cups DAILY!
In trying to eat that amount, do you find yourself falling into a dull routine of eating the same greens over and over, feeling a little uninspired about what’s for dinner?
This week I was excited to find myself lodged on an organic farm and right where I turned into the farm gate, was an Honesty table filled with brassicas - cabbages, cauliflowers, broccoli, Brussel sprouts etc.
Yes, it’s that time of year when the soft cool leafy lettuces of summer make way for the brassicas.
There are over a thousand varieties of leafy greens with tons of flavours to choose from…savoury, nutty, buttery, minty and even lemony.
Unfortunately, you will probably never see anything other than a couple varieties of greens at your grocery store or farmers’ market.
That’s just one of the many reasons why so many people are now choosing to grow their own food.
With homegrown food, you unlock the door to hundreds of varieties that may offer more for your health and well-being including more flavour and nutrients. People say that “homegrown just tastes better!”
