Hi….my name is Merryl and I’m a mother and grandmother who wants everyone to know the energetic wonder of eating living foods.
Late last year I spontaneously accepted an invitation to go cycling across South America with a stranger. I was taking a risk. I went into the adventure with my heart and not my head. You see, cycle touring has been a dream of mine for many years.
The adventure ended very shortly after starting because I had not considered how strong I would need to be to summit mountains on a bicycle! I also didn’t expect to be cycling on busy motorways. And I had expected more support.
Finding myself back in the British winter with no pet-sitting jobs booked I decided to take the opportunity to dive into something totally different. The loneliness of pet-sitting was taking its toll on my mental health. Socialising is one of the essential pillars of health and wellbeing.
My new vocation is Care Support Worker. It is one of those jobs that many people say they could never do. I wondered whether I would be able to find happiness in this service to others.
To be honest, I was astounded at the state of some of the clients I visit. I was shocked at the brokenness of humanity and I wanted to run as far as I could to escape the reality of life for these elderly and infirm people.
A month in, and I can honestly say that I am loving what I do. Entering the homes of the most vulnerable members of our society to aid them in tasks that we all take for granted is a humbling experience that has called up enormous empathy and acceptance.
At first I was very judgemental but very soon I learned that not everyone has had the good fortune to grow up in a happy family home. Each one of the humans that I help has had their own story to endure. I cannot change their reality or their choices. What I can do, is show compassion and patience and try to bring a touch of comfort, acceptance and light to their lives for the brief moments that I am in their presence.
This vocation has given me back a sense of purpose and worth. It has also made me even more aware of how important it is to have all those pillars of health in place so that I can age gracefully and with dignity.
