Take a Breath...--today's gift
Discover the profound impact conscious breathing can have on your life
Hi — Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I’m the former. I love that quiet moment in the day before much of mankind awakes - or at least before the household in which I’m residing awakes.
It is like that moment between breaths. A pause.
I am awaking to the hooting of a Cape Eagle Owl before dawn. It landed with a clunk on the corrugated tin roof above my bedroom yesterday. The morning sky was a watercolour masterpiece out over the Indian ocean and drew me outdoors to feel the morning.
Ronia, the crossbreed canine gets as excited to see the owl as we humans do. Her excited vibrations behind me turned my attention from the view just in time to see this nocturnal fowl fly out of the tree canopy, across the back garden, over my head and out across the coastal forest.
There are worse starts to the day, a British friend of mine would say. :-)
A couple of evenings ago I was blessed with other feathered friend sightings as I walked Ronia down the track that winds through dense coastal forest of sprawling ancient Milkwoods and other indigenous tree species interlaced with various climbers like the pretty scented blue flowered plumbago.
Through the green tangle I thought I spotted a pair of squirrels lumbering along a branch. Realising that I’m actually not in Squirrel country at the minute, I stepped back to find a clearer view through the leaves. I was amazed to see that it was not squirrels but a pair of magnificent Turacos (aka Knysna Louries) now sitting one below the other, heads turned in my direction. Man, I wish I’d had my camera with me!
The other winged watching I’ve done here is of the bats that sometimes swoop through the high eaves of my bedroom in the dark just before sleep. I pull the sheet over my head and say a prayer of thanks that they are keeping my environment free of mosquitos and spiders. They are helped in this regard by the ugly gecko I’ve spotted disappearing behind a dresser as I turn on a light.
